Why do we give up on ourselves? The concept of self-neglect

We all can fall into familiar patterns of behaviour and experience emotions such as a lack of self-belief, diminished self-assurance, and a disregard for our own worth.

When we lack confidence in our abilities and doubt our own worth, we tend to give up on ourselves. This can stem from various factors such as past failures, negative experiences, or even external influences that have led us to question our capabilities.

Additionally, societal pressures and comparison to others can erode our self-assurance. Constantly measuring ourselves against unrealistic standards can make us feel inadequate and contribute to a sense of resignation.

However, it’s crucial to recognize the detrimental impact of giving up on ourselves. By surrendering to self-doubt, we limit our growth, hinder our potential, and miss out on valuable opportunities for personal development and fulfillment.

Building and nurturing self-assurance is key to breaking free from this cycle. It involves recognizing our strengths, acknowledging past achievements, and fostering a positive self-image. Taking steps towards self-improvement, setting realistic goals, and celebrating our progress along the way can gradually bolster our confidence.

When we consistently prioritise the needs and desires of others above our own, we unintentionally reinforce the notion that taking initiative, exerting effort, or acknowledging our own accomplishments is unnecessary.
